Dangote Targets Kenya for East African Refinery

Prominent African billionaire discusses his journey to crossing $32 billion in wealth.

Aliko Dangote has indicated his preference for Kenya as the location of his proposed East African refinery. The refinery, announced in April, was originally planned for Tanzania’s Tanga port. However, Dangote, speaking to the Financial Times, believes that the coastal city of Mombasa is a better location for the project. He highlighted the Port of Mombasa, East Africa’s largest, as a key consideration, describing it as larger and deeper than the Port of Tanga. Dangote also emphasized Kenya’s bigger economy, which could support stronger fuel demand and improve the refinery’s commercial prospects. The proposed refinery, estimated to cost between $15 and $17 billion, will be modeled after his 650,000-barrel-per-day facility in Lagos, Nigeria. If successful, the project could potentially reshape East Africa’s energy landscape, much like the Lagos-based facility has reshaped West Africa’s.
