DA’s Zille predicts early end for GNU

4

Helen Zille, a senior figure in the Democratic Alliance (DA) and one of the architects of South Africa’s unity government, has expressed little confidence that the ruling coalition with the African National Congress (ANC) will last its full term until 2029. This fragile alliance, formed after the ANC lost its 30-year majority, has already weathered significant internal storms over major policy disagreements, such as land expropriation, taxation, and health reforms. Despite this, Zille believes that the looming ANC leadership contest in 2027 is a critical threat. She suggests that the party’s potential new leaders could abandon the coalition to partner with more radical parties, likely alarming investors and jeopardizing the recent surge in South African asset prices.
