Dodoma and Gitega Ink Railway Deal with Chinese Firms

Tanzania and Burundi have signed a $2.15 billion agreement to construct a railway to connect the two nations and transport metals, particularly the battery mineral nickel, to Tanzania’s port city of Dar es Salaam. The project, which will be executed by China Railway Engineering Group Ltd and China Railway Engineering Design and Consulting Group, signals a significant boost in regional infrastructure. The railway, a standard gauge line, will span 282 kilometers and be financed by the African Development Bank. The railway is projected to transport three million metric tons of minerals annually, facilitating efficient trade and resource movement. The development aligns with China’s broader efforts under the Belt and Road Initiative to fund critical infrastructure projects across Africa, further strengthening regional economic ties.
