ECOWAS rejects Guinea-Bissau junta’s plan

8

West Africa’s regional bloc, the Economic Community of West African States, has rejected the transition plan proposed by Guinea-Bissau’s military rulers and demanded a rapid return to constitutional order. The coup, which ousted President Umaro Sissoco Embalo, marks the ninth takeover in West and Central Africa in five years, intensifying fears of democratic erosion. During its annual summit in Abuja, Nigeria, ECOWAS leaders insisted on a short, inclusive transition and the release of all political detainees. They underscored this stance by mandating a high-level delegation to engage directly with the junta. The bloc issued a clear warning, threatening targeted sanctions against anyone obstructing a swift return to civilian rule, signaling renewed commitment to zero tolerance for unconstitutional power grabs.
