Egypt’s Grand Egyptian Museum opens its doors

5

The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), a monumental project decades in the making, is now fully open to the public. This colossal complex, situated near the Giza Pyramids, is a modern marvel that offers visitors an unprecedented journey through seven millennia of Egyptian history. The museum houses over 100,000 artifacts, including the complete collection of Tutankhamun and the 4,000-year-old, 42-meter-long funerary boat of Pharaoh Khufu. Breaking from traditional displays, the GEM uses immersive, narrative galleries to connect visitors with the full sweep of Egyptian civilization. The museum also boasts cutting-edge restoration labs, sustainable design features, and a solar-powered infrastructure. Despite controversies over its $1 billion cost and political oversight, GEM is set to attract five to eight million visitors annually, reinforcing Egypt’s status as a global cultural destination while celebrating the nation’s heritage in a high-tech, environmentally conscious setting.
