Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan used Africa Day celebrations, marking the African Union’s anniversary, to reinforce Turkey’s growing diplomatic and economic ties with African countries. In a public message, Erdogan praised the “strong historical and human ties” between Turkey and African nations, framing Africa as a community of brothers and sisters rather than mere trade partners. The gesture, while largely symbolic, reflects Turkey’s sustained diplomatic courtship of Africa—a strategy that has seen Ankara expand embassies, military agreements, and trade relationships across the continent over the past two decades. Ankara’s engagement with the continent grants it deep political goodwill and strong commercial relationships as competition for influence in Africa intensifies among global powers. For African governments, Turkey provides broader investment options and diversified partnerships beyond traditional Western allies.
