Exxon Mobil will supply liquefied natural gas to South Africa’s first planned LNG import terminal, the Zululand Energy Terminal (ZET), marking a significant step in the country’s effort to diversify its energy mix and reduce reliance on coal-fired power. The facility, under development at Richards Bay on South Africa’s east coast, is intended to help establish a competitive and sustainable domestic gas market, according to ZET director Oliver Naidu. Exxon Mobil has identified South Africa as a priority market and plans to expand its global LNG supply capacity to more than 40 million metric tons annually by 2030. The project also complements a recently signed agreement between state utility Eskom and the terminal, which will support a planned 3,000-megawatt gas-to-power facility.
