Five Pavilions Reimagine Soil as the Future of Architecture

7

At the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale, five standout national pavilions are redefining soil as more than just earth—it’s a material of the future. Embracing the theme “Intelligens Natural Artificial Collective,” countries like Turkey, Australia, Morocco, Mexico, and the Philippines explore the soil’s potential in sustainable architecture and cultural storytelling. Turkey chose to interpret soil as an “ecosystem that embodies natural intelligence,” while Australia highlighted soil as an inclusive space and home. Meanwhile, Morocco sought to show that combining ancient and modern construction methods can resolve today’s social and ecological problems. Mexico revisited Chinampas, an ancient Mesoamerican agricultural system, as urban design inspiration, while the Philippines presented soil as a living, memory-rich force. These innovative installations invite visitors to touch, reflect, and rethink the ground beneath their feet.
