In Juba’s Sherikat suburb, the Young Dream Football Academy is transforming the lives of South Sudanese youth once trapped in gang violence. Founded by 24-year-old Alaak “Kuku” Akuei, a former gang member, the academy uses football to offer purpose, discipline, and a sense of belonging to hundreds of children. In a country still recovering from years of civil war and instability, gangs often fill the void left by broken systems—but Young Dream provides a different path. The academy trains over 900 young footballers and also combats idleness and school dropouts with academic support and leadership workshops. Its coaches, all former gang members themselves, serve as living proof that transformation is possible. They are creating a supportive environment where youth can envision a brighter future, trading a life of risk for one filled with hope, discipline, and second chances.
