France is tightening visa rules for Algerian diplomats as tensions with Algiers continue to rise. In a letter to Prime Minister Francois Bayrou, President Emmanuel Macron ordered the suspension of a 2013 agreement that allowed Algerian officials to enter France without visas, citing growing migration and security concerns. The move follows Algeria’s refusal to accept deported nationals under France’s Obligation de Quitter le Territoire Français (OQTF), or “obligation to leave French territory,” deportation scheme, as well as disputes over Western Sahara and the detention of Franco-Algerian writer Boualem Sansal. Macron also urged coordination with other Schengen countries to restrict short-stay visas for affected Algerian officials. The decision marks a hardening of France’s stance, with Macron asserting that respect must be mutual.
