Funding cuts threaten catastrophic malaria resurgence, study warns

9

A new report warns that cuts to global anti-malaria funding could trigger the “deadliest resurgence ever,” potentially causing nearly a million deaths and massive economic losses across sub-Saharan Africa by 2030. The analysis found that a 20% reduction in support to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria could result in 33 million additional cases, 82,000 deaths, and over $5 billion in lost GDP. While African leaders are rising to the crisis by increasing domestic investments, they are also urging G7 nations, private companies, and philanthropists to help close the funding gap. Meanwhile, experts argue that investing in malaria control is not just a health imperative but a direct investment in economic stability and growth. According to them, fully funding the $18 billion Global Fund target could save 1.86 million lives and boost global GDP by $230 billion.
