Gabon’s constitutional court has officially confirmed Gen. Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema’s victory in the April 12 presidential election. Nguema, who led the 2023 coup, secured 94.85% of the vote. He defeated seven candidates, with his closest rival, former Prime Minister Alain Claude Bilie-By-Nze, receiving only 3% of the total votes cast. The election, which saw a 70.11% voter turnout, was Gabon’s first since Nguema’s coup ended the Bongo family’s 50-year political dynasty. Despite allegations from opposition figures about the misuse of state resources, local observers reported a satisfactory election process. Nguema is set to be inaugurated on May 3, beginning his seven-year term and solidifying his grip on power post-coup.
