Brice Oligui Nguema, head of Gabon’s military junta, is set to become the country’s new president after a landslide election victory. Nguema secured 90.35% of the vote in the weekend poll, according to provisional results from the nation’s Interior Ministry. The election, which was smooth and peaceful, was the first in 50 years free from the Bongo family’s rule. According to the Interior Ministry, voter turnout reached 70.4%, which was a significant increase from the previous election’s turnout of 56.65%. Nguema is expected to serve a seven-year term, with the possibility of one renewal. He has vowed to diversify Gabon’s oil-dependent economy and promote its agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism industries.
