Abigail Kwartekaa Quartey made history by winning the WIBF World Super Bantamweight title, making her Ghana’s first female world boxing champion. Hailing from Jamestown in Accra, Quartey’s unexpected journey began in her teens when her brother recognized her boxing potential. However, her family put up resistance, begging her to stop training. Despite this and other challenges she would face on her journey, Quartey persisted. Her victory, achieved against British boxer Sangeeta Birdie, proved her right, cementing her legacy alongside Ghanaian legends. More importantly, it paves the way for future female fighters with Quartey expressing a wish that her win will inspire more women to become professional athletes.
