Google Expands Fiber-Optic Reach in Africa With New Undersea Cable Hubs

6

Google is significantly expanding its digital infrastructure footprint in Africa by investing in new subsea fiber-optic cables. The tech giant plans to establish four hubs across the continent to anchor its latest undersea cables, building on the $1 billion commitment it announced in 2021. The project comes as demand for reliable internet access surges across Africa, where improved connectivity is key to economic growth and innovation. Meanwhile, the US Trade and Development Agency is backing a study examining the feasibility of extending the Medusa submarine cable system to Africa’s Atlantic coast. The measure, which could boost access for up to 22 countries and hundreds of millions of people, highlights Washington’s push to challenge Beijing’s growing foothold in Africa’s digital space.
