A tense political standoff is unfolding in Guinea-Bissau as both the incumbent president, Umaro Sissoco Embalo, and his main challenger, Fernando Dias, have declared victory in the recent presidential election. Each camp insists its candidate surpassed the 50 percent threshold needed to avoid a run-off, heightening tensions in the capital, Bissau. These conflicting claims were made before the National Electoral Commission released any official results, which are expected later this week. The election itself was notable as the historically dominant PAIGC party was barred from fielding its own candidate. As a result, the party threw its support behind Dias, giving him a significant boost. The country, which has a long history of political instability and coups, now watches and waits for an official outcome.
