Guinea Elections Test Democratic Transition Process

Guinea’s May 31 legislative and local elections will formally conclude the country’s post-coup transition, introducing a bicameral parliament with a new 87-member Senate alongside an expanded 147-seat National Assembly. While the polls represent genuine institutional progress, deep concerns surround their credibility. Forty opposition parties, including those of three former presidents and two ex-prime ministers, were dissolved in March, concentrating political power around President Mamady Doumbouya’s political movement. Likewise, transitional council members and former ministers are controversially contesting seats. President Doumbouya and his allies are the clear beneficiaries of the new status quo, as they consolidate power under a constitutional veneer. Meanwhile, opposition forces and civil society will lose institutional ground. Consequently, long-term stability hinges on whether the new institutions provide genuine representation or entrench one-party dominance.
