Guinea’s transitional government has officially set December 28, 2025, as the date for the country’s first presidential election since the 2021 coup. The announcement follows the Supreme Court’s validation of a constitutional referendum that could permit interim President Mamadi Doumbouya to run for office. Doumbouya, who seized power in 2021, had initially pledged to return the country to civilian rule by 2024 but missed that deadline. The new constitution extends presidential terms from five to seven years and allows members of the transitional government to seek office. Doumbouya has not yet indicated whether he will stand in the upcoming election.
