Explosions and gunfire were reported near Diori Hamani International Airport in Niger’s capital, Niamey, early Thursday, marking the second major attack targeting the facility this year. Residents said security forces repelled the assault after roughly two hours of fighting and pursued the attackers, who abandoned weapons as they fled. Authorities had not officially commented at the time of reporting, and no group claimed responsibility. Islamic State affiliates claimed responsibility for the other attack in January. The recurring attacks undermine the junta’s security credibility, even as it credits Russian assistance for repelling January’s assault. That incident also saw it accuse France, Benin, and Côte d’Ivoire of backing extremists—claims made without evidence. The attack increases pressure on Niger’s military government, which came to power promising to improve security.
