How Global Policies and Youth Are Redefining African Migration

1

African migration is entering a new era, shaped by shifting demographics, policy restrictions, and evolving destinations. Recent moves like Donald Trump’s 2025 travel ban and Canada’s proposed Strong Borders Act highlight tightening Western barriers, making it harder for Africans to secure visas or refugee status in Western nations. Yet migration flows are adapting: more Africans are moving within the continent, especially to Central African states like Angola, Chad, and Equatorial Guinea, while others are venturing to Asia, South America, and Australia. Additionally, non-African migration into the continent is rising, while local institutions play a growing role in managing these flows. This diversification reflects both economic opportunity and the continent’s booming youth population, which is expected to become the world’s largest by 2050.
