How Nigeria’s Plastic Waste Could Fuel a Sustainable Fashion Revolution

7

Nigeria’s massive plastic waste problem—2.5 million tons annually—could become an unexpected resource for its fashion industry. Researchers propose converting discarded PET bottles, many of which end up in landfills or pollute the environment, into textiles. Global brands like Adidas, H&M, and Patagonia already turn post-consumer plastics into polyester fibers for clothing and footwear, cutting carbon emissions significantly. In Nigeria, adoption is hindered by small-scale recycling, consumer skepticism, policy gaps, and even high humidity, which makes recycled polyester fabrics uncomfortable. However, initiatives such as community-based recycling and culturally inspired circular fashion show promise. Experts suggest that investing in decentralized recycling centers, supporting small textile businesses, educating consumers, and creating enabling policies could transform plastic waste into fashion, generating jobs, reducing pollution, and positioning Nigeria as a leader in sustainable textiles.
