African men are being lured to Russia with false promises of lucrative civilian jobs, only to be coerced into frontline combat in Ukraine. According to a recently published CNN investigation, recruits, often unemployed and paying large fees to agents, are offered well-paid engineering or security roles and then forced to sign military contracts in a language they don’t understand. Upon arrival in Russia, their passports are confiscated. Once deployed, many describe brutal conditions, racism, stolen wages, and minimal training. Recruits describe the battlefield as a brutal trap with only two outcomes: desertion or death. While Russian state media promotes a narrative of willing foreign fighters, the reality is a campaign of exploitation, leaving families pleading for their governments to bring these men home.
