Inside Ouarzazate, Morocco’s Cinematic Oasis

British stunt performer Ayesha Hussain has described Morocco’s desert city of Ouarzazate, south of the High Atlas mountains, as both a filmmaking hotspot and a deeply personal refuge. Known for its vast desert terrains, the historic destination has hosted major cinematic productions, including The Mummy, Lawrence of Arabia, and Gladiator II, where Hussain worked as part of a female stunt archery team. Hussain initially discovered the city during a road trip in 2019 and was enchanted by it. She would later return for filming, during which she developed a strong emotional connection to the area and its local culture. For visitors to the city, Hussain recommends Ranch Baikan in nearby Aït Benhaddou for horseback riding, praising its exceptional horses and panoramic views. Local restaurants—including Le Jardin des Arômes, a favorite of co-star Pedro Pascal—offer hearty Moroccan cuisine, while vibrant souks stock textiles, antiques, and intricate lamps.
