Guinea-Bissau’s President Umaro Cissoko Embalo recently announced he would not seek a second term in the November elections, even though he’s eligible. However, he criticized his political opponents, including Domingos Simoes Pereira, Braima Camara, and Nuno Nabiam, and stated that Guinea-Bissau deserves better leaders. Embalo’s tenure has been marked by conflicts with the PAIGC, his former party. For instance, he refused to appoint Pereira as prime minister after PAIGC’s victory in the last parliamentary election. Instead, he dissolved the parliament and has ruled by decree ever since. Embalo also has a dispute with Camara, the president of his current party, which is now split into two factions along the lines of loyalty. The third opponent, Nabiam, served as prime minister under Embalo from 2020 to 2023 but they’ve since had a falling out. Meanwhile, Embalo’s decision not to run has been met with skepticism, especially since he has since suggested he might reconsider.
