Israel is stepping up its diplomatic push in Africa as it seeks allies amid growing global isolation over the Gaza war. Recently, Israel reopened its embassy in Zambia after over five decades of not having a diplomatic presence in the country. Analysts say the move aims to chip away at South Africa’s strong regional influence, given Pretoria’s vocal support for Palestine and its genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice. Israeli officials have also courted Nigeria and South Sudan, though critics warn these efforts mask controversial plans, including reports of relocating Palestinians to East Africa. While Israel leverages development aid and security cooperation to build relationships, its overall standing remains precarious. Recently, the African Union suspended Israel’s observer status, and many nations on the continent maintain strong pro-Palestinian positions rooted in shared anti-colonial solidarity.
