Japan Pledges to Train 30,000 AI Experts in Africa

8

Africa’s AI market is set to reach $16 billion in five years, yet the continent holds just 1% of global AI talent. To bridge this gap, Japan has pledged to help train 30,000 AI professionals across Africa within three years. The initiative, led by the Japan International Cooperation Agency, focuses on building talent pipelines through universities, research networks, and partnerships with Japanese firms. Beyond technical training, the program aims to embed AI literacy across sectors and spur innovation in agriculture, health, and education. For Japan, the collaboration also addresses its own looming tech talent shortage, creating opportunities for co-creation between the two regions.
