Rwandan President Paul Kagame has dismissed long-serving Prime Minister Edouard Ngirente, appointing economist and former central bank official Justin Nsengiyumva as his successor. Ngirente, who was appointed to the position in 2017, was replaced on Wednesday in a surprise reshuffle. Nsengiyumva served as Vice Governor of the National Bank of Rwanda until he was appointed prime minister. He has a PhD in economics and prior to his role as vice governor, served as permanent secretary of Rwanda’s Ministry of Education, following an earlier tenure at the Ministry of Trade and Industry in the same role. Nsengiyumva pledged to lead with humility and align with Kagame’s vision for the country. The transition signals the imminent formation of a new Cabinet, as required by Rwanda’s Constitution.
