Kenya Airways pioneers sustainable fuel flight

3

Kenya Airways has just made aviation history by operating Africa’s first flight powered by a 50% blend of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). This landmark journey from Nairobi to Cape Town marks a giant leap toward eco-friendly air travel on the continent. The innovative fuel, made from sources like used cooking oil, can slash greenhouse gas emissions by up to 85%. But the airline’s commitment didn’t stop at the fuel tank; the entire flight experience was reimagined for sustainability. From upcycled blanket bags and locally sourced coffee to comprehensive recycling programs, every detail supported a greener mission. The initiative is part of the Sky Team Aviation Challenge 2025, promoting sustainability across the sector. Kenya Airways is also collaborating with governments, local innovators, and international partners to establish domestic SAF production by 2026, creating jobs while reducing environmental impact.
