Kenya plans to build a new airport to replace the ageing Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir announced at a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) symposium in Nairobi. The move follows years of infrastructure challenges and the collapse of a planned JKIA upgrade deal with India’s Adani Group amid graft concerns. Chirchir said the government would use PPPs to deliver the project and position Kenya as a leading aviation hub. Treasury CS John Mbadi added that the project is scheduled for completion before 2027. Alongside the new airport, the government is pursuing upgrades to JKIA’s runways, roads, and baggage systems, with potential funding from international lenders including the European Investment Bank, JICA, and China Exim Bank.
