A Kenyan police force will depart for Haiti on June 25 to lead a UN-backed mission against gang violence, despite legal challenges against it in Kenyan courts. The departure was confirmed by an interior ministry official who pled anonymity. The deployment will include 1,000 officers, with more to come from Benin, the Bahamas, Bangladesh, Barbados, and Chad. They will join two advance teams that were earlier deployed in preparation for their arrival. Funded by the US, the mission was approved last October by a UN Security Council resolution but faced delays when a Kenyan court ruled that the government cannot deploy police officers abroad without a prior agreement. The government has since rectified that issue.
