Yinka Shonibare, the British-Nigerian artist, has brought his groundbreaking exhibition to Madagascar, marking a pivotal moment for the Malagasy art scene. Shonibare’s work, known for its unique use of African wax print fabrics, explores themes of history, decolonization, and environmental degradation. His first major solo show in Africa, held at Fondation H, features thought-provoking installations, including The African Library, which contains about 6,000 books bedecked in African wax prints. This exhibition highlights not only Shonibare’s global impact but also Madagascar’s emerging art scene, providing a platform for local artists like Temandrota. Beyond his residency at Fondation H, Shonibare’s mission to develop artistic careers on the continent continues with two projects in Nigeria, one of which emphasizes sustainability.
