Libyan equestrian festival unites culture, community

10

Libya’s celebrated Zliten International Festival of Folk Horsemanship has expanded onto the global stage, building on the success of last year’s local event. During this year’s edition, crowds gathered to watch riders in traditional black-and-white uniforms guide horses draped in vibrant handmade saddles as they displayed riding skill, traditional poetry, and craftsmanship. Participants said the festival reflects Libya’s deep-rooted equestrian heritage and sends a rare message of unity in a country divided by rival administrations and years of conflict. Residents add that the event also helps reshape perceptions abroad by highlighting shared traditions. With Tunisia and Algeria joining on the sidelines, the two-day festival also acts as a gateway for the world to rediscover Libya’s enduring traditions beyond the headlines. Its resounding success promises an even promising future for this growing cultural showcase.
