Mali cancels dozens of exploration licenses

WTM Africa ATIC Conference 2025 (1)

Mali’s military government has revoked more than 90 mining exploration permits in a sweeping industry overhaul, affecting subsidiaries of major firms such as Harmony Gold, IAMGOLD, Cora Gold, Birimian Gold, and Resolute Mining. The decree, signed by Mines Minister Amadou Keita, voids permits issued between 2015 and 2022, freeing the affected areas for reassignment. Though no official reasons were given, the move reflects a growing regional trend toward tighter resource control, seen in countries like Burkina Faso and Niger. For Mali, a top African gold producer, this represents a push to boost national revenue from its crucial mining sector. This development, combined with existing security challenges and new international partnerships, signals a period of major transformation and heightened scrutiny for miners operating in the region.
