Roye Okupe, fresh off the success of Iyanu, is expanding his Afro-Anime universe with Malika: Warrior Queen, an animated feature inspired by his award-winning Dark Horse graphic novel. Set in a vibrant 15th-century West African empire, the film follows a young queen who rises from personal tragedy to unite a divided kingdom. Backed by industry heavyweights—including producer Doug Schwalbe and Emmy winner Randy Dormans—and starring Adesua Etomi-Wellington, the project blends anime’s emotional depth with the rhythm and intensity of African storytelling. As Okupe writes and directs, Malika aims to redefine global animation and spotlight African narratives as powerful, universal stories.
