At this year’s 100% Design Africa 2025, clay took center stage in Grounded Practice—a striking exhibition that celebrated ceramics as both artistic expression and emotional reflection. Curated by House Union Block in partnership with Spier Arts Trust and Spier Wine Farm, the showcase featured 23 thoughtfully selected pieces by 18 artists, selected from an original collection of 63 works. Each sculpture explores themes of stability, sustainability, and introspection amid global upheaval. More than just objects, these ceramics channel the grounding power of clay, connecting artists to land and healing. The exhibit challenges traditional views of ceramics as mere craft and seeks to reframe them as art as well. It also aimed to drive artist visibility and, by extension, sales.
