A major resurgence is on the horizon for Mozambique’s energy sector, as the government announces that TotalEnergies is ready to restart its monumental $20 billion liquefied natural gas (LNG) project. This development follows a force majeure declaration in 2021, which paused work due to insurgent attacks in the region. With improved security conditions now met, the path is clear for the French energy giant to reactivate one of Africa’s most significant natural gas investments. The Southern African megaproject, expected to produce 13 million metric tons per year, is slated to come online by 2029, five years later than originally planned. Restarting the project offers TotalEnergies a strategic opportunity to challenge rival Shell amid surging global gas demand and Western efforts to reduce dependence on Russian energy.
