Mozambique is gearing up to restart TotalEnergies’ massive $20 billion liquefied natural gas project, which was halted in 2021 following a deadly insurgent attack near its Afungi site. After years of heightened insecurity, the government now says it has established the necessary conditions for the project to resume safely. Consequently, TotalEnergies CEO, Patrick Pouyanné, recently met with President Daniel Chapo to discuss plans to relaunch operations this summer. Mozambique’s energy minister confirmed the government is working to fast-track investor readiness. While the insurgent threat hasn’t been fully eliminated, security efforts have brought some stability to the region. As global energy demand rises, this restart could mark a major economic boost for Mozambique’s future.
