Nairobi to host first pan-African biennale

Modern architecture of Nairobi's upcoming pan-African art event.

The architectural world is turning its eyes to Nairobi this September for the inaugural Pan-African Biennale. The event, curated by Somali-Italian architect Omar Degan, will bring together studios from all 54 African nations for a week of exhibitions, installations, and keynote dialogues. Organized around the theme “Shifting the Center: From Fragility to Resilience,” the biennale aims to reclaim African architecture as a site of spatial intelligence and cultural memory rather than a passive recipient of imported models. Three programmatic strands—climate change, vernacular intelligence, and African futures—will anchor the discussions. Planned as a rotating biennial event across different African countries, the biennale signals a bold, African-led vision for shaping the continent’s built future.
