Nigeria has intensified its campaign for Africa to secure permanent, veto-wielding seats on the United Nations Security Council. Speaking at the African Union–European Union Summit in Angola, President Bola Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, declared that comprehensive UN reforms can no longer be delayed. He argued that the continent’s significant security challenges, from armed conflict to political instability, demand a more equitable global governance structure. Tinubu also urged international partners to co-create security interventions that are firmly anchored on African-led frameworks, pointing to Nigeria’s own success in compelling the surrender of over 120,000 individuals affiliated with Boko Haram. Beyond security, he addressed challenges like irregular migration, proposing structured labor pathways as a solution, and reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to defending constitutional order across West Africa.
