Nigeria sets February 2027 election date

Nigeria’s electoral commission has set February 20, 2027, as polling day, launching the official campaign season. President Bola Tinubu, widely expected to seek reelection, faces an opposition coalition likely led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Governor Peter Obi.  Tinubu has consolidated power by attracting defectors from rival parties and securing loyalty within his own, while his economic reforms have started yielding results despite initial inflation. Meanwhile, tensions recently erupted over the electronic transmission of voting results, with opposition groups demanding real-time uploads to prevent tampering. Abubakar has also requested a review of the February election date, citing a potential conflict with Ramadan. As campaigning intensifies, the race promises a high-stakes showdown that will undoubtedly test Tinubu’s strengthened position.
