Tunde Onakoya, a Nigerian chess champion, has shattered the world record for the longest chess marathon, playing for 64 hours in New York’s Times Square alongside his Puerto Rican chess partner Shawn Martinez. The pair surpassed the previous 61-hour record, set by two Norwegian players in June 2024, to accomplish the new Guinness World Record. Beyond the record, Onakoya, also the founder of Chess in Slums Africa, used the event to raise awareness for a mission to build a free preschool for homeless children in Nigeria. Onakoya’s achievement symbolizes resilience and the power of dreams, receiving praise from both Nigerian leaders and global supporters.
