Nigeria’s military denies coup rumors over Independence Day parade cancellation

6

The Nigerian military has firmly dismissed reports that linked the cancellation of the nation’s 65th Independence Day parade to an alleged coup plot. Defense officials labeled these claims as entirely false and malicious, and alleged that they were intended to create public tension and distrust. They provided a clear, operational rationale for the decision: the cancellation allowed President Bola Tinubu to attend a crucial bilateral meeting abroad. Furthermore, it enabled the Armed Forces to maintain their full focus on ongoing counter-terrorism and anti-banditry operations across the country. The statement also clarified that a separate investigation into sixteen officers is a routine internal disciplinary process. Reaffirming its loyalty to the constitution and the federal government, the military high command urged citizens to disregard sensationalist rumors and continue supporting security forces in their vital mission to protect the nation.
