Nigeria’s Oba Femi emerges as WWE’s new star

Intense wrestling move between two athletes during a match.

Nigerian-born wrestler Oba Femi has cemented his status as WWE’s “next big thing” following a historic victory over legend Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas. The 6-foot-6, 140-kilogram Lagos native, born Isaac Odugbesan, used his signature “fall from grace” powerbomb to defeat Lesnar in under five minutes, prompting the veteran to leave his boots in the ring—a traditional sign of retirement. Before wrestling, Femi was an elite shot putter at the University of Alabama, winning multiple Southeastern Conference championships and qualifying for the 2022 World Championships. However, he walked away from the opportunity after WWE scouts recruited him. The 28-year-old, who holds a degree in visual arts, credits his Yoruba upbringing and the resilient “Naija no dey carry last” spirit for his meteoric rise.
