RSF’s Hemedti promises probe after reported mass killings

7

Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) chief, Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti), has pledged to investigate alleged atrocities committed by his troops during their capture of el-Fasher, the army’s last stronghold in Darfur. His promise follows mounting global outrage over reports that more than 460 civilians were massacred, including patients at the city’s last functioning hospital. While Hemedti apologized for the “disaster,” rights groups note that previous RSF investigations—such as those into massacres in el-Geneina and Gezira—never yielded results. The fall of el-Fasher solidifies a major geographic and political split in the country amid its ongoing civil war, leaving the RSF in control of much of western Sudan.
