Russia expands African diplomatic footprint

Russia is expanding its diplomatic footprint in Africa, with plans to open new embassies in Comoros, Togo, and The Gambia, bringing its total missions on the continent to 49. The move underscores Moscow’s growing focus on Africa as a strategic frontier for political, economic, and security partnerships. In recent years, Russia has steadily increased engagement, particularly in mining, energy, and defense, with trade also growing. This expansion comes amid intensifying global competition, as China, the United States, and European powers also seek influence across Africa’s resource-rich and fast-growing markets. For African governments, the rivalry offers opportunities to secure better deals and diversify partnerships. Meanwhile, Western nations continue to lose strategic ground as Russia effectively courts African capitals with unconditional security pacts.
