Rwanda and DR Congo Seek Draft Peace Accord by Early May

5

Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have set a May 2 deadline to draft a peace agreement, following escalating rebel activities in the region. During talks in Washington, Rwanda and DRC’s foreign ministers, with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio present, agreed to create a draft agreement by the deadline. Both countries pledged to respect each other’s sovereignty and resolve disputes peacefully, committing to avoid military support for non-state armed groups. The peace efforts follow a recent truce between the DRC and M23 rebels, and come amid US calls for Rwanda to cease its alleged backing of the M23. In addition, the US government committed to facilitating significant investments for both countries in mineral value chains and hydropower development.
