A planned training camp in the US for Senegal’s women’s basketball team has been canceled after visa denials for 12 members of the team, including five players. Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko scrapped the trip, criticizing the move. The training camp was in preparation for the 2025 Women’s AfroBasket scheduled for next month in Côte d’Ivoire. Following the development, the training camp will now take place in Dakar. While the US State Department did not provide a reason for the denials, the visa refusals come amid reports of expanded US travel restrictions on 25 African countries. Senegal’s women’s team, one of Africa’s best, had hoped to gain a competitive edge with US-based training ahead of the continental tournament.
