Senegal’s government and the Movement of Democratic Forces of Casamance (MFDC) have signed a peace agreement, brokered by Guinea-Bissau President Umaro Sissoco Embalo, effectively ending a conflict that has spanned four decades. At a joint press briefing in Guinea-Bissau, Senegal’s Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko hailed the agreement as a major step toward lasting peace in Casamance, the southern region long divided by separatist strife. The deal, which followed a three-day negotiation, builds on recent progress towards peace. For instance, over 250 MFDC fighters laid down their arms in 2023. This breakthrough promises to revive the region’s economy as well as strengthen ties between West African nations.
