Skin-Lightening Products Linked to Cancer in African Women

10

The widespread use of skin-lightening products among African women is raising serious health concerns, with links to cancer now emerging. In some African countries, lighter skin is seen as more attractive, a cosmetic trend believed by many to be rooted in colonial-era beauty standards. However, dark-skinned people have melanin, which provides natural protection from cancer-causing sun damage. Skin-lightening creams rid the body of this melanin, thereby increasing the risk of cancer. Despite bans in countries like South Africa and Kenya, poorly regulated markets allow dangerous products to thrive. Experts warn of rising complications, fueled by social media and celebrity influence, and call for urgent reforms, including stricter regulation, public education, and inclusive beauty representation across industries.
