Pretoria is seeking an extension on the July 9 deadline for US tariffs as it negotiates a deal with the Trump administration to protect key exports. The US had imposed a 31% tariff on South African goods in April, but paused it for 90 days to allow talks. Pretoria is seeking a trade deal that would exempt some of its biggest industries, such as steel, aluminum, and auto parts, from the tariffs. In return, it offered to buy American liquefied natural gas. However, South African negotiators recently met with US officials in Luanda, where they learned that a new engagement template for African countries is being developed. In response, South Africa has proposed an extension of the deadline so it can adjust its proposed deals to reflect the new template.
